The power market

The Norwegian power market now

How much water is in the reservoirs, what is being produced and used, what is out of service, and what electricity costs on the exchange. The page is built from open data from NVE, Statnett, Nord Pool's urgent market messages and Nord Pool's day-ahead prices, and is updated twice a day.

The hydro reservoirs

Filling of Norway's hydro reservoirs in week 43 (25 Oct), from NVE's reservoir statistics, compared with the same week in 1995–2025.

All of Norway: 4 of 31 earlier years had less water in week 43.

Filling is the water in the reservoirs as a share of their capacity, expressed as energy (TWh). The line in each box spans the lowest to the highest filling in the same week of earlier years; the upright mark is the median and the dot is this year.

The power system right now

Production and consumption for all of Norway, the latest quarter-hour measured by Statnett (2 Nov 16:45).

No new readings from Statnett since 2 Nov 16:45. The figures below are the last known ones. The most recent fetch attempt was 2 Nov 18:10.

Production by source

  • Hydro 90 %
  • Wind 9 %
  • Thermal and other 1 %

“Thermal and other” is Statnett's two categories “thermal” and “not specified” combined.

Production and consumption per day

Norway's total production and consumption as daily means. The bars cover the last 90 days; the table gives the mean over 30, 90 and 365 days.

  • Consumption
Mean, GW30 days90 days365 days
Production16.915.017.1
Consumption15.514.116.1
Net export1.41.01.0

Daily mean = the day's energy (MWh from Statnett) divided by the day's hours. Net export is production minus consumption; a negative figure means import.

Production out of service

All production in NO1–NO5 that the producers have announced as fully or partly out of service in Nord Pool's urgent market messages (UMM), summed. Three weeks back and eleven weeks ahead.

Production out of service per day, GW (highest simultaneous value, rounded to 50 MW)

The messages by stated reason: maintenance and overhaul 49 · repair 6 · fault 34 · testing 23 · limitation 4 · other 58.

Individual plants are not shown. All production is reported summed and unnamed, as the terms for Nord Pool's urgent market messages require. Reasons are sorted into fixed categories from the message text.

The spot price over time

Monthly means of the daily average prices, 24 months back, per price area. These are bare exchange prices — the supplier's markup, the electricity tax and the grid fee come on top, and the electricity subsidy (strømstøtte) is not deducted.

Each bar is the mean of that month's daily average prices. Individual days can sit far above and below the bar.

Sources and method

Every number on this page comes from an open source. Nothing is processed beyond the daily and monthly means and the comparisons with earlier years that we compute ourselves.

Updates. Data is fetched twice a day and appears when the site is next rebuilt. The times at the top show when we last read each source, not when the readings were taken. If a source has not answered for more than 36 hours, the affected part of the page says so. If a source stops publishing new readings, the last known figures are shown along with the time they were measured. NVE publishes the reservoir figures once a week.

Individual plants. No individual plant is shown. All production out of service is summed and unnamed, as the terms for Nord Pool's urgent market messages require.

Common questions

Why does the price differ across NO1–NO5?
Norway is split into five price areas. The grid can only move so much power between them, and when a connection reaches its limit each area gets its own price. Prices are also shaped by the links to neighbouring countries, which differ from area to area. The monthly means above show the difference area by area.
Why does reservoir filling matter for the price?
Most Norwegian electricity comes from hydro power, and the water in the reservoirs is energy that can be stored for later. Producers weigh what the water is worth now against what it may be worth later. When the reservoirs hold little water for the time of year, the water is valued higher and that pushes prices up; when they hold a lot, it pulls them down. The comparison with the same week in earlier years shows where this year stands.
Do the prices on this page include VAT?
No. By default the spot price is shown excluding VAT, the way the exchange quotes it. The incl. VAT button adds 25% — except in NO4, which is shown without VAT because households in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark pay no VAT on electricity. The electricity tax, the supplier's markup, the grid fee and the electricity subsidy are not part of any number on this page.
