The electricity spot price now
The spot price per price area, hour by hour. These are exchange prices — the supplier's markup, VAT, the electricity tax and the grid fee come on top, and the electricity subsidy is not deducted. The hour table shows the subsidy and the price after it in columns of their own.

Subsidy and «after subsidy» are for NO1: the state covers 90% of the spot price above 77 øre/kWh excl. VAT, hour by hour, for the first 5,000 kWh a month. «Mean of the hours» is the average of the hours in the column. How the subsidy is worked out
A metering point on Norgespris gets no electricity subsidy (strømstøtte). About Norgespris

What do you actually pay?
The spot price is one of several lines on an electricity bill. Per kWh, they are:
- Spot price (the power exchange)
- 188.0 øre/kWh (day average)The price shown above: the hourly price (average) from Hva koster strømmen.no, excl. VAT and before the electricity subsidy (strømstøtte).
- Supplier markup
- variesDiffers by supplier and contract, and comes on top of any monthly fee. The markup and monthly fee of every contract are in the comparison.
- Elavgift (electricity tax)
- 7.13 øre/kWh7.13 øre/kWh excl. VAT, the same rate all of 2026. Billed on the grid bill by the grid company, not by the supplier. Households in the tiltakssone (the northern action zone) pay no elavgift: all of Finnmark and the municipalities of Karlsøy, Kvænangen, Kåfjord, Lyngen, Nordreisa, Skjervøy and Storfjord in northern Troms. That is not the same area as the VAT exemption (all of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark).
- VAT (mva)
- 25 %25% on all the lines here, the grid fee and elavgift included. Households in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark pay no VAT on electricity, which is why NO4 is shown without VAT.
- Grid fee (nettleie)
- variesPaid to the grid company, not to the supplier. It varies between grid companies and is not part of the prices here.
- Electricity subsidy (strømstøtte)
- −99.9 øre/kWh excl. VAT (day average)The state covers 90% of the spot price above 77 øre/kWh excl. VAT, hour by hour, for the first 5,000 kWh a month. It is deducted on the grid bill and applies to every contract type, but not if you have chosen Norgespris.
Worked example for 1 kWh at the day-average price (NO1, 3 Nov)
Spot price 187.98 + elavgift 7.13 = 195.11 øre/kWh excl. VAT. With 25% VAT that is 243.9 øre/kWh. The subsidy at this price is 124.9 øre/kWh incl. VAT, deducted on the grid bill: 119.0 øre/kWh. The supplier's markup and the grid fee come on top of that.
Why do NO1–NO5 differ?
Norway is split into five price areas. Transmission capacity between them is limited, and when it is fully used each area gets its own price. The price in each area is shown above.
Negative prices
The spot price can drop below zero. In such an hour a spot contract pays you for the electricity itself — but the markup, the grid fee and elavgift still apply. Negative hours are shown in blue.

One area's prices hour by hour, with the subsidy, on a page of its own.
Common questions
- What is the spot price?
- The spot price is what electricity trades at on the power exchange. It is set the day before, separately for every price area. It is the bare electricity price: the supplier's markup, VAT, the electricity tax and the grid fee are not included, and the electricity subsidy is not deducted. The prices here are hourly prices (the mean of each hour); since 1 October 2025 the market has set the price per quarter hour.
- Why does the price differ across NO1–NO5?
- Norway is split into five price areas. The grid can only move a limited amount of power between areas, and when a connection reaches its limit each area gets its own price.
- When do tomorrow's prices arrive?
- Tomorrow's prices are published around 13:00. Until then only today's prices exist. This page picks tomorrow's prices up automatically as soon as they are out.
- Are the prices with or without VAT?
- By default the prices are shown without VAT, the way the exchange quotes them. The VAT switch shows prices with 25% VAT added. NO4 stays without VAT, because households in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark pay no VAT on electricity. Your choice is remembered in your browser.
- Is the electricity subsidy deducted?
- No. In 2026 the subsidy (strømstøtte) covers 90% of the spot price above 77 øre/kWh excl. VAT, worked out hour by hour, and it is deducted on the grid invoice. The spot prices here are before the subsidy; the hour table shows the subsidy and the price after it for the price area you have chosen in columns of their own.
