Electricity subsidy 2026 (strømstøtte)

The electricity subsidy covers part of the spot price when it is high. Here is how it is worked out in 2026, who it applies to, and an example with the spot prices of the last seven days.

Øre/kWh excl. VATSpot prices from the collection of 2 Nov 2026, 17:40

How the subsidy is worked out

The subsidy is worked out hour by hour for each price area. When the spot price in an hour is above 77 øre/kWh excl. VAT, the subsidy covers 90% of the part above 77 øre. At 77 øre or less, that hour earns no subsidy.

It applies to households, for the first 5,000 kWh a month per metering point.

It applies to fixed prices too

The subsidy applies to every contract type, fixed-price contracts included. It is worked out from the spot price in the price area, not from the price in your contract.

That is why the subsidy does not change the order of the contracts within a price area, and why it is not deducted from the estimated total price in the comparison.

How you get it

The subsidy is deducted on the grid (nettleie) invoice from your grid company.

Subsidy or Norgespris

You cannot have both the subsidy and Norgespris on the same metering point. A metering point on Norgespris does not get the subsidy.

An example with the prices of the last seven days

In NO2 Sørlandet the spot price averaged 166.8 øre/kWh excl. VAT over the last seven days. An hour at that price is 89.8 øre above the 77 øre threshold, and the subsidy is 90% of that: 80.8 øre/kWh. What is left to pay for the electricity itself is 86.0 øre/kWh excl. VAT.

Electricity subsidy by price area

The spot price is the mean of the last seven full days. The subsidy is worked out for one hour at the average price. Every figure is øre/kWh excl. VAT.

Price areaSpot price, 7 daysSubsidyAfter subsidy
NO1 Østlandet152.567.984.5
NO2 Sørlandet166.880.886.0
NO3 Midt-Norge99.119.979.2
NO4 Nord-Norge21.80.021.8
NO5 Vestlandet146.162.183.9

The subsidy is worked out hour by hour, so a calculation on a seven-day average is only an estimate: hours priced above 77 øre earn the subsidy even when the average is lower.

Markup, monthly fee, the electricity tax and the grid fee are not included in the table.

The comparison does not deduct the subsidy: it is the same whatever the contract, and contracts are ranked on their own estimated total price.

Questions about the electricity subsidy

How large is the electricity subsidy in 2026?

90% of the spot price above 77 øre/kWh excl. VAT, worked out hour by hour for each price area, for the first 5,000 kWh a month per metering point.

Do I get the subsidy on a fixed-price contract?

Yes. The subsidy applies to every contract type, fixed-price contracts included. It is worked out from the spot price in the price area, not from the price in your contract.

How do I get the subsidy?

It is deducted on the grid (nettleie) invoice from your grid company.

Can I get both the subsidy and Norgespris?

No, not on the same metering point. A metering point on Norgespris does not get the subsidy.

Why is the subsidy not deducted in the comparison?

Because it is worked out from the spot price in the price area, not from the contract. Two households in the same price area with the same consumption hour by hour get the same subsidy whatever their contract, so it does not change which contract has the lowest total price.
